"A Dream Play" is a 1901 theatrical work written by the influential Swedish playwright August Strindberg. It was written during a period of intense personal and psychological exploration for Strindberg. The play premiered in Stockholm and marked a radical shift in theatrical storytelling.

The narrative follows Indra's Daughter, a divine figure from Hindu mythology who descends to Earth to observe and experience human existence. She takes on human form and interacts with a variety of characters who represent different walks of life. Through her journey, she witnesses the beauty and the inherent suffering of the human condition.

Strindberg wrote the play to specifically mimic the logical structure of dreams, abandoning traditional cause-and-effect storytelling. Scenes flow into one another without concern for time or space, mirroring how the subconscious mind works during sleep. This dream-logic approach was highly influential on later theatrical movements like Surrealism and Absurdism.

The play is considered a pioneering work of expressionism and theatrical modernism. Strindberg's decision to forgo linear narrative in favor of emotional, dream-like imagery paved the way for 20th-century avant-garde theater.
