The Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) is a NASA Explorer mission spacecraft launched in August 1997 to study matter from the solar wind and the interstellar medium. Positioned at the Earth-Sun Lagrange point 1 (L1), it orbits roughly 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, allowing it to sample energetic particles before they reach Earth's magnetosphere. The spacecraft carries nine scientific instruments designed to measure the elemental and isotopic composition of cosmic rays and solar particles.
