ACM International Competitive Programming Association (ICPC)

Contestants in the ICPC are restricted to using C, C++, Java, Python, or Kotlin to solve the algorithmic problem sets. While Python is occasionally used for rapid prototyping, most competitive teams rely heavily on C++ due to its superior execution speed and the robust Standard Template Library.

A standard competing team in the ACM ICPC consists of exactly three university students who must share a single computer during the five-hour contest. This grueling format forces teams to strategize heavily, as they must often write code on a whiteboard or paper while waiting for their teammates to finish compiling their solutions.

In the ICPC, teams are ranked first by the total number of problems solved, but ties are broken by a penalty point system based on time. A team accumulates 20 penalty minutes for every incorrect submission, and the total time is calculated by the number of minutes elapsed from the start of the contest to when the problem was successfully solved.

Graduate students are allowed to participate in the ICPC, provided they meet the strict eligibility criteria set forth by the organization. A student must have completed less than five years of university-level studies, meaning older graduate students or those who already hold a bachelor's degree for several years are ineligible to compete.
