Adulthood Rites

Adulthood Rites is the second book in the Xenogenesis trilogy, preceded by Dawn and followed by Imago. The series explores the aftermath of a devastating nuclear war on Earth and the subsequent rescue and genetic modification of human survivors by an alien race called the Oankali.

The story centers on Akin, the first male human-Oankali construct child born to Lilith Iyapo from the first novel. Akin possesses enhanced sensory abilities and struggles to reconcile his dual human and alien nature while trying to help human resisters who refuse to interbreed.

In the novel, the Oankali have genetically altered human biology so that resisters are sterile and can only reproduce through the Oankali's genetic trade. Akin fights to establish a separate settlement on Mars where pure humans can have children on their own terms, despite the Oankali's belief that this is genetically doomed to fail.

While the novel itself did not win, Octavia E. Butler's profound impact on the genre during this era earned her multiple prestigious accolades, including Hugo and Nebula Awards for her other works. Adulthood Rites remains a critically acclaimed cornerstone of her career.
