Al-Rifa'i Mosque

The Al-Rifa’i Mosque is a significant architectural landmark located in Cairo, Egypt. It sits prominently in the historic section of the city, directly opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan. Constructed in 1912, it represents a notable example of modern Islamic architecture.

The mosque functions as the royal mausoleum for prominent Egyptian families, including the last royal family of Egypt. Notable figures buried there include Khedive Tewfik Pasha and King Farouk. It also houses the tomb of the last Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

Construction of the mosque was completed in 1912, though the building process spanned several decades and involved multiple architects. It was originally commissioned by Khushyar Hanim, the mother of Khedive Isma'il Pasha. The prolonged construction resulted in a beautiful blend of architectural styles.

The Al-Rifa’i Mosque was designed to complement the neighboring Mamluk-style Sultan Hassan Mosque, adopting a similarly grand scale and historicist style. It features traditional Islamic architectural elements blended with modern building techniques of its era. The interior is richly decorated with marble, gold, and intricate calligraphy.
