Albert Schweitzer was an Alsatian theologian, philosopher, physician, music scholar, and organist whose work crossed religious studies, medicine, and European musical culture. He wrote an influential study of Johann Sebastian Bach and became known as a performer and interpreter of Bach's organ music. Schweitzer also established a hospital at Lambarene in present-day Gabon and received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his ethical philosophy and humanitarian work.
