description Alexander Popov Overview

Alexander Stepanovich Popov was a Russian physicist known for experimental work on radio-wave reception during the early development of wireless communication. On 7 May 1895, he demonstrated a coherer-based receiver to the Russian Physical and Chemical Society in Saint Petersburg; the apparatus was initially presented as a means of detecting electrical disturbances from lightning. He later adapted related equipment for wireless signaling, and Russia commemorates the demonstration date as Radio Day.
