Alfredo Casella (1883-1947) was an Italian composer, pianist, conductor, teacher, and writer who helped renew interest in instrumental music in early twentieth-century Italy. His works absorbed influences from French modernism, neoclassicism, and earlier Italian traditions, and include symphonies, concertos, chamber music, piano pieces, and the ballet La giara. He also cofounded the Società Italiana di Musica Moderna and promoted both contemporary and neglected historical repertoire.
