help Alibaba Cloud Elastic Container Instance FAQ

What is Alibaba Cloud Elastic Container Instance?

Elastic Container Instance, or ECI, is Alibaba Cloud's serverless container service. You submit a Docker image and container resources, while Alibaba Cloud manages the underlying compute infrastructure instead of requiring you to maintain virtual machines.

How is ECI different from running containers on ECS virtual machines?

With ECS, the customer provisions and manages the virtual machines that host the containers. ECI removes that server-management layer and charges for the resources consumed by the container instances.

Can Alibaba Cloud ECI work with Kubernetes?

Yes. ECI can connect to Kubernetes through Virtual Kubelet, allowing a cluster to use ECI for elastic or burst capacity. This can be useful when workloads need additional containers without adding permanent worker nodes.

Does ECI scale for sudden traffic spikes?

ECI is designed to launch container instances with custom resource specifications and provide elastic capacity for bursts. Alibaba Cloud also integrates ECI with services for networking, logging, persistence, and monitoring.
