help Almach FAQ

Can Almach be split with a small telescope?

Yes. A modest telescope can separate the bright golden primary from the fainter blue or blue-green companion because the visible pair is separated by roughly 10 arcseconds. Steady air and moderate magnification improve the color contrast.

Is Almach really a binary star?

It looks like a double through a small telescope, but Gamma Andromedae is a multiple system. The fainter visual component contains additional close stars that require much more aperture and resolution to separate.

How can Almach be found in the constellation Andromeda?

Almach is Gamma Andromedae and marks the eastern end of Andromeda's main chain, near the border with Perseus. At about magnitude 2, it is visible without optical aid under ordinary suburban skies.

Why do observers describe Almach's companion as blue, green, or purple?

The perceived color is influenced by contrast with Almach's bright golden primary, as well as telescope optics and individual vision. The same companion may therefore appear blue-green to one observer and deep blue or indigo to another.
