Altai Tavan Bogd Steppe

The steppe is situated entirely within the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park in western Mongolia. This remote region is characterized by its pristine alpine meadows and high-altitude pastures.

The region is highly notable for its ancient petroglyphs, which depict thousands of years of nomadic life. These rock carvings provide an invaluable record of prehistoric culture and Bronze Age transit in the Altai mountains.

In the Mongolian language, Tavan Bogd translates roughly to the Five Saints. This name refers to the region's five massive, snow-capped peaks that dominate the landscape near the borders of Russia and China.

The Kazakh nomads are the primary traditional inhabitants who still graze their livestock on the steppe during the summer months. They are famously known for their traditional practice of hunting with trained golden eagles.
