The zero-drop (0 mm heel-to-toe offset) design encourages a midfoot or forefoot strike, which many trail runners find reduces knee impact on long descents. Because the Lone Peak 9 also uses a wide FootShape toe box, runners transitioning from traditional shoes should ease in gradually to avoid Achilles strain.

The Lone Peak 9 offers a firmer, more grounded feel with its Stacked Midsole, while the Speedgoat 5 uses a thicker layer of HOKA's softer compression-molded EVA foam for more plush cushioning. Runners who prefer trail feel and foot stability tend to favor the Lone Peak, whereas those prioritizing maximum shock absorption lean toward the Speedgoat.

The Lone Peak 9 can handle brief road sections, but its lug pattern and E4 Metaframe are tuned for dirt, gravel, and rocky trail surfaces rather than pavement. Prolonged road use will wear the lugs faster and the firmer ride may feel less forgiving than a dedicated road shoe.

The Lone Peak 9 introduces the updated E4 Metaframe midsole for improved stability and a redesigned outsole lug pattern for better grip on loose terrain. The zero-drop platform and wide toe box that define the Lone Peak line remain unchanged.
