American Violet

description American Violet Overview

American Violet is a 2008 American drama directed by Tim Disney and inspired by the case of Regina Kelly in Hearne, Texas. Nicole Beharie plays Dee Roberts, a young Black mother arrested during a mass drug raid who refuses a plea bargain and challenges the prosecution with help from civil-rights attorneys. The film examines coercive plea bargaining, unreliable informants, racial inequality, and the consequences of aggressive drug enforcement.
