The film was directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and marked his feature-length directorial debut. Cofi is the beloved Staffordshire Terrier owned by the young protagonist, Octavio, in the film's first storyline. Octavio enters Cofi into brutal underground dogfights to raise money so he can run away with his sister-in-law. A violent clash between Cofi and the hitman known as 'El Chivo' serves as the catalyst that links all three storylines together.

Thematically, the film is often considered the first installment of Iñárritu's 'Trilogy of Death,' alongside '21 Grams' and 'Babel.' The three films are not connected by plot or characters, but all explore the concept of death, grief, and how random tragic events connect disparate people. They all share the non-linear, multi-strand narrative structure.
