Ancillary Justice

The protagonist, Breq, uses the pronoun "she" to describe everyone, regardless of their actual gender. This is because the Radchaai empire, where she comes from, does not linguistically distinguish between male and female genders.

The main character is named Breq, and she is an "ancillary," which is essentially a human body whose mind has been wiped and taken over by an artificial intelligence. She was formerly a starship known as the Justice of Toren before a betrayal left her stranded in a single human body.

Published in 2013, Ancillary Justice achieved a historic clean sweep of the most prestigious science fiction awards. It won the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the Arthur C. Clarke Award for Best Novel.

Breq is seeking to assassinate the Lord of the Radch, a vast, multi-bodied, and paranoid artificial intelligence named Anaander Mianaai. Because Mianaai controls thousands of bodies simultaneously, Breq struggles with figuring out which specific version of the Lord she is actually targeting.
