André Leroi-Gourhan revolutionized the study of cave art by applying structuralist theory to the placement of animal paintings. He argued that the animals depicted, such as bison and horses, were arranged in binary opposition based on male and female principles. This moved away from the older 'hunting magic' theories.

Leroi-Gourhan is most famous for his meticulous excavation of the Pincevent site in France. He pioneered the excavation method called 'décapage,' which involved carefully removing horizontal layers of soil to map the exact distribution of artifacts. This allowed him to reconstruct the daily living spaces of Magdalenian reindeer hunters.

In his comprehensive work *Gesture and Speech*, he outlined how human technological evolution was deeply tied to the development of the brain and language. He argued that the invention of tools and the use of fire predated the evolution of modern Homo sapiens. He coined the concept of 'operational chains' in anthropology.

André Leroi-Gourhan was a prominent French anthropologist and archaeologist who lived from 1911 to 1986. He spent much of his academic career teaching at institutions like the Sorbonne and the Collège de France. His legacy firmly cemented the structural approach in French prehistory.
