Andrew Manze

He is a British conductor and violinist famed for historically informed performance, first as a leading baroque violinist and later from the podium. He began his career as associate director of the Academy of Ancient Music.

He directed The English Concert from 2003 to 2007, succeeding its founder Trevor Pinnock. He led the period-instrument ensemble in repertoire from Corelli and Handel onward before focusing on conducting.

He served as chief conductor of the NDR Radiophilharmonie in Hanover, leading the orchestra for much of the 2010s into the early 2020s. He also held a principal conductorship with Sweden's Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra.

His Harmonia Mundi recordings are landmarks of the HIP discography, especially the Mozart and Beethoven violin sonatas performed with harpsichordist Richard Egarr, as well as Biber's Rosary Sonatas. As a conductor he has recorded symphonic repertoire including Vaughan Williams.

His public performances have shifted overwhelmingly toward conducting, though his violinistic insight from decades of baroque performance shapes his interpretations. He remains a sought-after guest conductor for both modern-instrument and period orchestras.
