Antarctic Fur Seal

Antarctic fur seals are primarily found in the Southern Ocean, breeding on subantarctic islands such as South Georgia and the South Shetland Islands. During the non-breeding season, they spend much of their time foraging in the icy waters around Antarctica. They rely heavily on the productive marine environments of the Southern Ocean.

Their diet consists heavily of Antarctic krill, which makes up the vast majority of their daily intake. They also occasionally consume fish and squid depending on their location and the availability of prey. Their specialized foraging habits make them a crucial predator in the Southern Ocean ecosystem.

During the late 18th and 19th centuries, sealers heavily targeted the species for its dense, luxurious fur, driving the population nearly to extinction by the early 20th century. Following the implementation of international protections, the species has experienced an incredible rebound. Today, their global population numbers are estimated to be in the millions.

Antarctic fur seals can be highly territorial and aggressive, especially during the breeding season when dominant males are defending their harems. If approached too closely on land, they will not hesitate to charge or bite perceived threats. Tourists visiting subantarctic islands are required to maintain a strict distance to avoid dangerous encounters.
