Anton Arensky (1861-1906) was a Russian composer, pianist, and teacher whose music belongs largely to the late-Romantic tradition. He studied with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and was strongly influenced by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a connection heard in his lyrical melodies and expressive harmonies. His chamber catalogue includes String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Op.

35, whose unusual scoring uses violin, viola, and two cellos and whose variation movement was later arranged for string orchestra.
