Aouanrhet Petroglyphs

The Aouanrhet petroglyphs are located in Tassili n'Ajjer, a vast plateau region in southeastern Algeria known for its extraordinary concentration of prehistoric rock art. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tassili n'Ajjer contains thousands of engravings and paintings spanning multiple artistic periods.

The Round Head tradition is a pre-Saharan rock art style characterized by stylized human figures with large, round heads, often masked or horned. These figures appear in ritualistic or ceremonial compositions, suggesting a spiritual or shamanic context. The tradition is unique to the central Sahara and is considered Neolithic in date.

The rock art at Tassili n'Ajjer spans thousands of years, with the Round Head period generally dated to the Neolithic era, roughly between 6,000 and 4,000 BCE. This was a time when the Sahara was significantly wetter and supported human and animal life. Later periods include pastoral and horse-period engravings.

The masked and horned human figures at Aouanrhet are believed to represent ritual or ceremonial practices, possibly related to hunting magic or spiritual beliefs of the Neolithic peoples who created them. Their enigmatic appearance has led to various interpretations by archaeologists. They are among the most distinctive images in Saharan rock art.
