Both the AirPods Max and the Sony WH-1000XM5 offer top-tier active noise cancellation, but the AirPods Max is frequently rated slightly higher for low-frequency noise reduction in independent tests. Apple's implementation uses multiple outward- and inward-facing microphones combined with computational audio processing optimized through the H-series chip.

AirPods Max can connect to Android devices and other Bluetooth sources as standard Bluetooth headphones, but you lose features like spatial audio with head tracking, automatic device switching between Apple devices, and the seamless pairing experience. For Android users, alternatives like the Sony WH-1000XM5 provide better platform-specific integration at a lower price.

AirPods Max do not support true lossless audio over their Bluetooth connection, as they rely on the AAC codec which compresses the audio signal. Even when using Apple Music's Lossless tier with a wired connection via a Lightning-to-3.5mm cable, the signal is still converted to an analog-to-digital format rather than passing a true lossless bitstream to the drivers.

AirPods Max offer seamless automatic switching between Apple devices signed into the same iCloud account—for example, moving from an iPhone call to a MacBook video without manual re-pairing. The spatial audio feature with dynamic head tracking also integrates with Apple TV and Apple Music to create a theater-like listening experience that competitors cannot replicate within the Apple ecosystem.
