Archaos

The pioneering nouveau cirque troupe Archaos was founded by French circus artist Pierrot Bidon in 1986. Bidon established the group to create a radical alternative to the traditional, animal-based circus format.

Archaos was famous for its highly dangerous, industrial-themed acts that replaced traditional circus animals with heavy machinery. Their performances featured extreme, edgy stunts involving motorcycles, cars, and industrial equipment, often performed over the audience.

Yes, Archaos toured extensively outside of France, gaining massive international notoriety in the late 1980s and early 1990s. They performed critically acclaimed, highly disruptive shows in major cultural hubs like London and Edinburgh, cementing the nouveau cirque movement globally.

Despite their massive cultural impact, Archaos faced severe financial and logistical difficulties in the mid-1990s and eventually disbanded. However, their legacy heavily influenced the modern landscape of contemporary circus companies like Cirque du Soleil and Les 7 Doigts de la Main.
