Archibald Hill

Archibald Hill was awarded the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his quantitative discovery regarding heat production in contracting muscles. He precisely measured the thermal changes that occur when a muscle fiber twitches.

Archibald Hill shared the 1922 Nobel Prize with the Danish physiologist August Krogh. While Hill won for his research on the mechanics and heat of muscle contractions, Krogh was awarded for his independent work on the regulation of capillaries.

In biochemistry, the "Hill equation" is named after him, originally formulated to describe the binding of oxygen to hemoglobin. The formula mathematically models how ligands bind to a macromolecule, heavily influencing modern pharmacology.

Hill conducted much of his foundational biophysics research at Cambridge University. He utilized highly sensitive thermocouples to detect the microscopic temperature variations generated by frog muscle spasms.
