Arne Bang Ceramics

Arne Bang is best known for his hand-thrown stoneware characterized by thick, richly textured glazes in earth tones like matte blues, greens, and browns. He was a pioneer of Danish studio ceramics, operating from the 1920s through the 1950s. His heavily applied, running glazes influenced a whole generation of Scandinavian potters.

Arne Bang produced the majority of his famous works at his own studio in Holte, Denmark, which he established in the early 1930s. He also co-founded and worked at the Saxo Stentøj pottery alongside the ceramicist Jakob Bang. His Holte studio became the epicenter for his highly distinctive, heavy stoneware production.

Authentic Arne Bang pieces are almost always hand-thrown and feature his distinctive, heavy application of crackled or running glazes. They are typically signed with his incised initials or name, often alongside "Holte" or "Saxo," on the bottom of the piece. The sheer weight and thick, textured glaze application are immediate indicators of his work.

While his brother, Jacob Bang, was famous for designing mass-produced tableware for companies like Royal Copenhagen, Arne focused strictly on unique studio pieces. His works were highly sought after for their individual craftsmanship, deliberately thick glazes, and organic forms. This dedication to studio pottery makes his surviving works highly valuable today.
