In artistic billiards, players attempt a set of 76 preset trick shots, each assigned a specific difficulty rating. The maximum possible score a player can achieve in a standard match is 500 points, which requires near-perfect execution of the highest-value shots.

The game is played on a pocketless carom table using three balls, typically a red object ball and two white cue balls. Players use highly specialized cues designed to execute extreme spin techniques, such as massé shots, required to complete the difficult preset shots.

A massé shot is a technique where the player strikes the cue ball at a steep, almost vertical angle to generate severe forward or side spin. This spin allows the cue ball to curve dramatically around obstacles, which is essential for completing many of the discipline's 76 preset shots.

The sport is governed by the Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB), which organizes the World Artistic Billiards Championships. This organization standardizes the 76 specific shots and the maximum 500-point scoring system used in professional tournaments.
