Ashmore Reef is a reef and island group in the Timor Sea under Australian administration, northwest of the Australian mainland and south of Indonesia. Together with nearby Cartier Island, it forms the Australian external territory known as the Territory of Ashmore and Cartier Islands. Much of the area is protected as a marine reserve because its reefs, lagoons, seagrass habitats, seabird colonies, and marine animals have ecological and conservation significance.
