Released by Atari in 1989, the Lynx is a 16-bit handheld game console notable for being the first portable gaming device to feature a built-in, backlit color LCD screen. Originally developed by Epyx under the name Handy, the hardware was acquired and rebranded by Atari before its launch. The system was physically large and required six AA batteries, which made it less portable than its primary competitor, Nintendo's Game Boy. It supported multiplayer gaming for up to seventeen units via its ComLynx cable system.
