Atari Mega ST

The Atari Mega ST was powered by the Motorola 68000 processor, running at a clock speed of 8 MHz. This was the same robust CPU used in the earlier Atari 520ST and the Apple Macintosh. The processor provided enough computational power to handle advanced desktop publishing and graphic design tasks for its era.

The Atari Mega ST ran on Atari TOS (The Operating System), which booted directly into the GEM (Graphical Environment Manager) graphical user interface. This provided users with a mouse-driven, window-based desktop environment similar to the early Apple Macintosh. The operating system was stored on ROM chips directly on the motherboard, allowing for exceptionally fast boot times.

Unlike the standard ST home computers, the Atari Mega ST was the first in the line to feature a power supply and an optional internal hard drive, typically a 20MB or 30MB MFM drive. It was designed specifically as a professional desktop workstation to compete directly with the Apple Macintosh. The inclusion of internal mass storage made it highly attractive to business users.

Following the initial launch of the ST computer line in 1985, the Atari Mega ST was officially released to the public around 1987. It was introduced to provide a more professional, expandable desktop chassis compared to the keyboard-integrated 520ST. This release targeted desktop publishing houses that needed more robust hardware for professional workflows.
