Atomic Blonde

The film is adapted from "The Coldest City," a graphic novel by Antony Johnston and artist Sam Hart, published by Oni Press. It is set in Berlin in November 1989, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The film's director David Leitch had previously co-directed the first John Wick.

James McAvoy plays David Percival, a volatile MI6 station chief in Berlin, while John Goodman appears as a CIA operative. Sofia Boutella co-stars as Delphine Lasalle, a French intelligence agent who becomes involved with Theron's character Lorraine Broughton. Eddie Marsan and Toby Jones round out the principal cast.

The celebrated staircase fight sequence was heavily promoted as a near-continuous shot, though it contains several hidden cuts stitched together seamlessly. Charlize Theron performed much of the fight choreography herself after extensive training. The scene was filmed on a set in Budapest, which doubled for Cold War-era Berlin.

A sequel was announced after the first film earned roughly $100 million worldwide at the box office. Charlize Theron has publicly expressed interest in reprising her role as Lorraine Broughtout. However, as of the mid-2020s, Atomic Blonde 2 has not entered production.
