The autumnal moth is the Palearctic geometrid moth Epirrita autumnata, a species described by Moritz Balthasar Borkhausen in 1794. Its caterpillars feed mainly on birch and can become abundant enough to cause extensive defoliation during periodic outbreaks. Such outbreaks are particularly documented in northern Fennoscandia, including Lapland, where the species is a significant disturbance agent in birch woodland.
