help AWS Route 53 Resolver FAQ

What is AWS Route 53 Resolver used for?

Route 53 Resolver handles DNS queries inside Amazon VPCs and can connect AWS name resolution with on-premises DNS. It is a DNS resolution component, not the same thing as registering a domain or hosting a public Route 53 zone.

What is the difference between inbound and outbound Resolver endpoints?

An inbound endpoint lets DNS resolvers on a private network query AWS resources such as records in a Route 53 private hosted zone. An outbound endpoint lets resources in a VPC forward selected DNS queries to on-premises DNS servers through forwarding rules.

How do Resolver forwarding rules work?

A forwarding rule matches a DNS namespace and sends matching queries to configured target DNS servers through an outbound endpoint. For example, a rule for corp.internal can direct AWS workloads to a company's internal DNS infrastructure.

Does Route 53 Resolver support hybrid-cloud DNS?

Yes, hybrid DNS is one of its main use cases for connecting VPCs with data centers over AWS Direct Connect or a managed VPN. Inbound and outbound endpoints handle the two directions of that name-resolution path.
