description Azure Data Box Overview
The Azure Data Box is a ruggedized storage appliance designed for efficiently moving substantial datasets into Microsoft Azure. It offers a direct, offline transfer method, significantly reducing bandwidth requirements and accelerating cloud migrations. This device is particularly beneficial for organizations needing to move large on-premises databases, archives, or media files to the cloud, especially where network connectivity is limited or expensive.
help Azure Data Box FAQ
When should I use Azure Data Box instead of uploading over the internet?
Data Box is intended for migrations where network transfer would take too long or consume too much bandwidth, such as moving tens of terabytes into Azure. Microsoft ships a physical appliance, the customer copies data locally, and the encrypted device is returned for ingestion into Azure.
How much data fits on an Azure Data Box?
The standard Data Box has traditionally provided about 80 TB of usable capacity, while other members of the family serve smaller or much larger jobs. Microsoft also offers Data Box Disk and high-capacity Data Box Heavy options, so the correct choice depends on the migration size.
Is data encrypted on an Azure Data Box?
Yes. Data Box appliances use hardware encryption, and access is controlled through credentials supplied in the Azure portal. Microsoft erases the device after the import is completed according to the service workflow.
Can Azure Data Box export data out of Azure?
Data Box supports both import and export scenarios in eligible regions. For an export order, Microsoft copies selected Azure Storage data onto the appliance before shipping it to the customer.
