Bagataway

Bagataway is an ancient Indigenous North American stick-and-ball game that is widely recognized as the foundational predecessor to modern lacrosse. It involved large numbers of players and deeply spiritual rituals long before European contact.

The term Bagataway originates from Indigenous languages, often translating roughly to 'they bump hips'. This name refers to the highly physical, sometimes violent nature of the traditional gameplay.

Players used hand-carved wooden sticks featuring a curved basket or webbing at the end to catch and throw a small leather ball. The sticks varied greatly in length and design depending on the specific tribe playing the game.

Beyond being a physical sport, Bagataway held deep spiritual significance and was often played to resolve conflicts between tribes. The games were massive community events that could last for days and involve hundreds of warriors.
