Balikpapan Bay is an inlet on the southeast coast of Borneo in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, beside the port and oil-producing city of Balikpapan. Its petroleum facilities made the area strategically important during the Second World War. Japanese forces captured Balikpapan in January 1942, and an Australian-led Allied force landed there in July 1945 in the operation that became the largest and final major Australian amphibious assault of the war.
