Ballistic Nylon

Ballistic nylon is a thick, robust, and tightly woven fabric created using a 2x2 basket weave, originally developed to protect World War II airmen from shrapnel. While ballistic nylon is incredibly smooth and highly resistant to physical impact and abrasion, Cordura 1000D is woven differently and often features a rougher texture with superior snag and tear resistance. Ballistic nylon is generally considered slightly less specialized than modern Cordura for certain outdoor applications.

Ballistic nylon is heavily favored for military and tactical bags because its dense, tight weave offers paramount resistance to sharp edges and rough, abrasive surfaces. It withstands significant physical impact without tearing or degrading over time. When treated with a polyurethane coating, it becomes highly water-resistant, protecting sensitive gear from the elements.

The denier rating refers to the thickness and weight of the individual fibers used to weave the nylon; for example, 1050D ballistic nylon indicates a very heavy, thick yarn. A higher denier number translates to a thicker, more robust fabric that is highly resistant to abrasion. Most premium tactical bags utilize 1050D ballistic nylon to ensure extreme structural integrity.

While the incredibly tight weave of ballistic nylon makes it highly water-resistant on its own, it is not naturally waterproof. Most high-quality tactical bags made from ballistic nylon are treated with a polyurethane (PU) coating on the inside to prevent water penetration entirely. The outer surface may still get wet, but the coating protects the contents inside the bag.
