Balthus

description Balthus Overview

Balthus (Balthasar Klossowski de Rola, 1908-2001) was a French-Polish painter known for figurative compositions in a deliberately archaic style. Self-taught as a painter, he was mentored by Pierre Bonnard and Maurice Denis, developing an approach influenced by Renaissance frescoes and early Italian painting. His works often depict young girls in dreamlike interiors, creating mysterious narratives with psychological tension. He served as director of the French Academy in Rome from 1961 to 1977.

His paintings can be found in major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Tate Gallery.

help Balthus FAQ

Why is Balthus's painting Thérèse Dreaming controversial?

The 1938 painting portrays the adolescent Thérèse Blanchard in a private, highly staged pose. Debate centers on its sexualized viewpoint, although museums also place it within Balthus's unsettling approach to childhood, stillness, and looking.

Why did Balthus paint in an old-fashioned style?

Balthus rejected the dominant abstraction of his era and studied artists such as Piero della Francesca and Courbet. His carefully modeled figures and muted interiors therefore look deliberately archaic beside Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism.

What was Balthus's real name?

He was born Balthasar Klossowski in Paris in 1908 to a Polish-German artistic family. His brother Pierre Klossowski became a noted writer, translator, and artist.

What did Balthus do at the Villa Medici in Rome?

Balthus directed the French Academy in Rome from 1961 to 1977. He also supervised a major restoration of the Villa Medici while continuing to paint portraits, interiors, and landscapes.
