Barry Harris

Barry Harris is best known as a bebop pianist and teacher who preserved the harmonic language of Bud Powell, Charlie Parker, and Thelonious Monk. He was born in Detroit in 1929 and became a major educator in New York jazz circles.

The Barry Harris method usually refers to his teaching around sixth-diminished scales, bebop movement, dominant harmony, and practical voice leading. His workshops trained generations of players to hear bebop as a living grammar rather than just memorized licks.

Barry Harris at the Jazz Workshop from 1960 is a common starting point for his trio playing. Barry Harris Plays Tadd Dameron is also important because Dameron's writing fits Harris's elegant bebop sensibility.

Harris came out of Detroit's deep bebop scene, the same city associated with musicians such as Tommy Flanagan, Hank Jones, and Donald Byrd. That Detroit foundation shaped his hard-swinging but harmonically precise piano style.
