Electronic Arts released Battlefield 2 for Microsoft Windows in June 2005. Developed by the Swedish studio DICE, it was a major technological leap for the franchise, utilizing a new game engine to support massive multiplayer warfare. The game quickly became a dominant force in the competitive online gaming scene.

Battlefield 2 introduced an innovative "Commander Mode," where one player on each team views the battlefield from a top-down tactical perspective. The commander can deploy artillery strikes, drop supply crates, launch UAV scans, and give orders to squad leaders via voice chat.
