description Belarus Overview
Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe whose capital is Minsk; it became independent with the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Forests cover roughly two-fifths of its territory and it contains thousands of lakes, particularly in the north. It retains extensive Soviet-era architecture and monuments, including the war memorial at the Brest Fortress. Alexander Lukashenko has held the presidency since 1994, and the country was heavily affected by the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in the south.
