Benny Green Trio

Benny Green is an American jazz pianist from Berkeley, California, who built his hard-bop vocabulary through high-profile apprenticeships with Betty Carter, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and bassist Ray Brown. His playing is deeply rooted in the blues-drenched bebop tradition of pianists like Bud Powell and Oscar Peterson.

Green has recorded trio albums for labels including Blue Note, Telarc, and Criss Cross Jazz, featuring both standards from the bebop canon and original compositions. His recordings typically emphasize swinging, straight-ahead acoustic jazz with tight interplay among piano, bass, and drums.

The trio plays hard bop and mainstream acoustic jazz, emphasizing blues inflection, bebop harmonic language, and strong swing rhythm. Green's playing draws directly from pianists like Bud Powell, Wynton Kelly, and especially Oscar Peterson, under whom Green studied informally during his time with Ray Brown.

Beyond his trio leadership, Green is widely known for his work in a duo with guitarist Russell Malone, with whom he has recorded several acclaimed albums.
