Berliner Ensemble

The Berliner Ensemble was established in 1949 by the renowned German playwright and poet Bertolt Brecht and his wife, actress Helene Weigel. It quickly became one of the most influential theater companies in Europe.

The theater company was originally formed to serve as the main institutional stage for performing Brecht's own plays. It functioned as a practical laboratory to apply, test, and showcase his theories on 'epic theater.'

The theater company is situated in Berlin, Germany. In 1954, the company moved into the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm, a historic venue located on the banks of the River Spree where it remains today.

The company is historically famous for staging and refining the techniques of Epic Theatre. This style, developed by Bertolt Brecht, emphasizes rational detachment and critical thinking over emotional immersion, often using the 'Verfremdungseffekt' (distancing effect) to alienate the audience from the fiction.
