description Bibracte Overview
Bibracte was an Iron Age Gaulish oppidum located on Mont Beuvray in the Burgundy region of France. Serving as the capital of the Aedui tribe, the fortified hilltop settlement was a major political, economic, and religious center prior to the Roman conquest. It is historically significant as the site where Vercingetorix was declared leader of the Gallic coalition in 52 BCE, and later hosted Julius Caesar as he completed his commentaries on the Gallic Wars.
