The original brick tower was completed and first lit in 1867, not 1873. Its present black-and-white appearance came later, when cast-iron plates were installed to protect the deteriorating brick.
How do you reach Big Sable Point Lighthouse?
The lighthouse is inside Ludington State Park and is reached by a walk of roughly two miles from the main parking area. The route crosses a scenic landscape of Lake Michigan shoreline and dunes.
Can visitors climb Big Sable Point Lighthouse?
Seasonal visitors can climb the tower when it is staffed by Lakeshore Keepers. The climb has about 130 steps and ends with broad views over Lake Michigan and the surrounding dunes.
