Yes, Blood+ is a television series reimagining of the concept introduced in Production I.G's 2000 anime film Blood: The Last Vampire. Both feature a girl named Saya who fights monstrous bat-like creatures called chiropterans, but the Blood+ version reworks the character with a different backstory, personality, and expanded mythology. The two are considered separate takes on the same foundational idea.

Blood+ ran for 50 episodes, airing from 2005 to 2006. The extended length allowed the series to develop its story across multiple international locations, including Okinawa, Vietnam, Russia, France, and New York. Production I.G handled the animation for the entire run.

Chiropterans are vampiric creatures that feed on human blood and possess enhanced strength and regeneration, making them nearly impossible to kill with conventional weapons. They are created through experimentation involving the blood of queens like Saya and her twin sister Diva. The secret organization called the Red Shield has spent centuries fighting them.

Diva is Saya's twin sister and the primary antagonist of the series, raised in isolation as a laboratory specimen while Saya was raised with human compassion. Their divergent upbringings produced opposing worldviews, with Diva driven by a desire for freedom and family that manifests in destructive ways. Their centuries-long sibling conflict is the emotional and thematic center of the series.
