After returning to the town of Appaloosa, the pair become involved in a struggle involving corrupt authority, hired gunmen, and competing claims to control the community. Like the other Cole and Hitch books, it emphasizes terse dialogue, personal loyalty, frontier justice, and the partnership between its two protagonists.
