description BMW M2 Overview
The BMW M2 concentrates BMW's performance coupe formula into a compact, rear-wheel-drive car. A turbocharged engine and performance-focused chassis give it an identity centered on driver involvement, while muscular bodywork makes its sporting purpose clear. Steering response, braking capability and suspension tuning are central to its character on winding roads and during track use. Although placed in an all-wheel-drive category here, the M2 is rear-wheel drive.
Its appeal lies in that layout and the balance between a relatively compact body and substantial performance. It suits enthusiasts who want an engaging coupe that can also handle ordinary driving, while accepting the compromises of firm suspension and a smaller cabin. Different generations vary in technology and driving feel, so the model name alone does not identify one exact specification.
help BMW M2 FAQ
Is the BMW M2 actually all-wheel drive?
The modern BMW M2 is known for rear-wheel drive, not all-wheel drive. The G87 generation uses BMW M division hardware but keeps the compact coupe's classic front-engine, rear-drive character.
What engine does the current BMW M2 use?
The G87 BMW M2 uses BMW's S58 twin-turbo inline-six, related to the engine in the M3 and M4. It is one reason the M2 feels closer to a full M car than to a lightly tuned 2 Series.
Can you get a BMW M2 with a manual transmission?
Yes, BMW has offered the G87 M2 with a 6-speed manual in markets including the United States. That makes it unusual among modern performance coupes, where automatic-only setups are increasingly common.
How does the BMW M2 differ from the M240i xDrive?
The M240i xDrive is an all-wheel-drive M Performance model, while the M2 is a full M car with a wider body, track-focused chassis tuning, and the S58 engine. The M240i is easiergoing as a daily driver, but the M2 is the sharper performance model.
