The first compact skid-steer loader was initially called the Keller Loader, developed by brothers Louis and Cyril Keller in the late 1950s. It was later rebranded as the Bobcat M-60 after the Melroe Manufacturing Company acquired the rights to the design.

Bobcat Company is currently a subsidiary of the Doosan Group, a massive heavy machinery conglomerate based in South Korea. Doosan acquired Bobcat from the Ingersoll Rand company in 2007 for roughly $4.9 billion.

Bobcat's global headquarters and primary manufacturing facilities are located in West Fargo, North Dakota. This is very close to the original roots of the company's founding in the neighboring state of Minnesota.
