description Boris Safonov Overview
Boris Feoktistovich Safonov was a Soviet naval aviator and fighter ace during World War II. He served with the Northern Fleet in the Arctic theater, achieving around 30 aerial victories against German aircraft. He was the first Soviet pilot to be twice awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union during the conflict. Safonov was killed in action on May 30, 1942, while defending an Arctic convoy.
