Botrynema brucei is a pelagic hydromedusa classified in the order Trachymedusae. The species was collected during early twentieth-century polar oceanographic surveys and was named after William Speirs Bruce, the Scottish naturalist and Antarctic explorer. It is associated with cold-water marine research and with the deep or open-water hydrozoan fauna documented by historical expeditions.
