Bottlenose Dolphin

Bottlenose dolphins are widely considered one of the most intelligent non-human species on Earth. They possess a brain-to-body size ratio second only to humans and exhibit complex problem-solving abilities. They also demonstrate self-awareness, a trait proven when they easily pass the 'mirror test' by recognizing their own reflections.

The melon is the rounded, fatty organ located on the dolphin's forehead. It acts as an acoustic lens to focus and direct high-frequency sound waves used in echolocation. By emitting clicking sounds and listening to the echoes bouncing off objects, they can determine the exact size, shape, and speed of prey and predators.

In Shark Bay, Australia, certain bottlenose dolphins have been observed breaking off cone-shaped marine sponges and wearing them on their beaks. This protects their sensitive snouts from sharp rocks and stingrays while foraging in the rough rubble on the sea floor. This cultural behavior is passed down from mothers to daughters, making it a rare example of tool use in marine mammals.

Much like a human name, a signature whistle is a unique acoustic sound developed by each individual bottlenose dolphin. They use this specific whistle to introduce themselves and maintain contact with other members of their pod. Research has shown that dolphins can remember the signature whistles of former tankmates for over 20 years.
